Claggett Promoted, Ransom DFA'd
Per Peter Abraham, Anthony Claggett has been called up to the majors, likely as a fresh arm in case Sergio Mitre gets bombed early (which could easily happen). I don’t see Claggett staying in the majors for very long, and he will likely be demoted immediately after today’s game. Nonetheless, an impressive outing could put him more on the radar for the Yankee brass.
Cody Ransom was at long last DFA’d, considering he has basically been an offensive zero for a little while, and is not a great defender to boot. I would like to see them bring back Ramiro Pena to take Ransom’s spot as the 2nd utility guy, as Pena’s speed and defense will be much more useful than Ransom’s inability to make contact and sub-par defense.

Hip hip hoo ray!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This raises two compelling questions:
1. Assuming Ransom does not hook on with another major league team, do you think he’ll be invited back for Old Timer’s Day next year?
2. If so, will the fans boo him?
I would definitely boo him. Hell, I would boo him at his own wedding (he and his bride).
Awesome – very funny. Next year’s old times day will be capped off by Cody booting an easy slow roller down the line. The crowd will surely boo…
Thank the good lord that he is gone. I imagine we saw his worst and there is a better baseball player there but I’m just sick of seeing him.
If Pena comes up tomorrow that will be icing on the cake. I was really sad to see him sent down instead of Cody. Wondering also if Shelly might get another call?
Ha. I was just tired of hearing Girardi discuss Ransom’s purpose everyday. His explanations were priceless.
And, based on what I’ve read, it looks like Ramiro will be the one to get the nod after Claggett is sent back down. We’ll probably see him for the Boston series, actually.
So we are basically going to have a 33 year old Hairston and a 24 year old Hairston? I don’t see the point in trading for Hairston if your going to have Pena?… Neither one is going to hit above .260 this year and neither one of them is a huge upgrade in speed and they both play all positions except Hairston can play the outfield better than Pena because hes been doing it longer… seems like a waste to me, just call up Shelley for some power against lefties until Gardner comes back.
Exactly. They want Pena to turn into a Hairston type. Seems totally redundant to have both.
Pena is probably going to have a better bat in the long run but for right now he won’t be able to hit to much better if at all because he is just 24 and has barley spent any time in triple A.
Ramiro Pena still needs to learn how to hit in the minors and should stay playing every day like Jackson and Cervelli, plus why trade for Hairston if your bringing Pena back up they are the same type of player ones jut developed and older.
I agree that 2 utility guys are probably not necessary, but if the choice is between Pena and bringing back Ransom (assuming Ransom returns to the Yankee organization), I would take Pena in a heartbeat. I would like another outfielder on the roster, preferably somebody who could play center.
I hope to god they just release him and don’t bring him back on Scranton, they can’t do that can they? I assume that Gardner is on his way back soon and that would be the CFer you are talking about, however let me say this if Gardner has a set back ad won’t be back until right before the playoff then Austin Jackson might not be a terrible choice if he is allowed to get plenty of playing time but I don’t think it will be necessary.
Hairston in over 800 career fielding innings in CF is a plus defender.
Agreed. I think that once Gardner returns, John Rodriguez should get a shot. THe Yankees will already have Gardner and Hairston to cover the speed and defense stuff, Pena would be redundant.
Actually, looking at it again, Rodriguez is another lefty. Maybe Shelley makes more sense.
J-Rod deserves a shot, definitely.
Shelley has more power and will be able to add a righty to the bench, plus Rodriguez has never played under the Yankee spotlight and Shelley has and it doesn’t seem to effect him he just isn’t great but Jrod isn’t any better.
Funny that Clagett is coming back. Its sad but a healthy Mitre has been reminding me of the hurt Wang. This only enforces that… hopefully Clagett will do a little better this time. With any luck we won’t give up 20 runs tonight.
He is a poor mans Wang funny thing is his velocity is where Wang’s was once it dropped.
Maybe Claggett will show something and give himself some trade value for a starting pitcher.
Rumor has it he will only be here for one game. I doubt he can do enough in a few innings to turn himself into a real chip. That said, waiver deals are often about the money, and you dont need to give up a real chip sometimes.
If he can just show he can batters out at the MLB level I can’t see the Dbacks not taking him in a Garland deal.
Interesting. Mitre reminds me of (a slimmer) Sidney Ponson…
I think the correct term is that Ransom is an offensive negative.
Yankees have signed Russ Ortiz. Interesting. I’d give him a shot over Mitre. Anyone hear whether someone picked up BJ Ryan?
The Cubs signed him weeks ago and sent him to the minors… I watch the Astros living in Houston and I am not so sure Ortiz is better than Mitre, he really never goes deeper into games than Mitre and he allows a lot fly balls which is bad in our park. We will see though can’t hurt to put him Scranton and see what he does…
OK sign me up for Ortiz… who the hell strikes out the first two batters and then gives up 2 runs on ground balls and bloops with two outs?
Ortiz started this year out of the Houston Bull pen so if he fails as a starter maybe they think he can offer some innings in relief Aceves style and free up Aceves for the rotation, that’s just me speculating though.
