Zach McAllister, probably the Yankees’ top pitching prospect in the minors, was recently placed on the DL after the Eastern League All Star Game, in which he was topping out in the high 80′s.  McAllister, 21, has been great this season for Trenton, going 5-4 with a 2.25 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP in 92 innings, and was named the starting pitcher in the All-Star Game by his manager Tony Franklin.

After being placed on the DL, McAllister underwent an MRI on his right shoulder.  The results came back negative, and no structural damage was observed.  Hopefully there’s no serious injury involved, and it’s just a case of fatigue for a pitcher who has been very durable throughout his minor league career.  The timing of the injury is not ideal for the upcoming trade deadline, since Zach is a potentially desirable asset to a team looking for a high-floor starter who is a good bet to be a mid-rotation starter in the bigs.  Zach’s lack of an ace ceiling would likely mean that he could be moved in the right deal by the Yankees, but I doubt a team will trade for a pitcher on the DL.

Yeah this could not have come at a worse time, but hey it may mean we get to keep yet another starting pitching prospect and next year we should have some real depth with Hughes, Chamberlain, Kennedy, Mcallister and Nova and Kontos for spot starts couple that with the main stays of CC and Burnett and the unknown in Wang we should be able to hang with anyones rotation for a few years to come.
