From Pete Abraham:

He went out firing, saying he would not return to the Yankees even if he cleared waivers and was offered a spot with Triple-A Scranton.

“I don’t think I got a fair shot,” he said. “I pitched great in spring training and didn’t make the team. I pitched great in the minors, got called up and didn’t get much of a chance. I understand other guys are pitching great. But it could have been different. I can’t see the point in coming back.”

Brett Tomko has been around a long time, and at no point has he been anything better than middling, while he has often been awful. Yet he has made 20 million dollars in his career, and the Yankees gave him a shot to earn some more money despite his ERA exceeding 5.50 in each of the last two seasons. He pulled down a paycheck to throw 20 below average innings for the Yankees, and is now mouthing off about not getting a chance. Brett, you have had 13 years of chances, and now the Yankees are giving some young guy their first shot at having a MLB career. Simmer down.

I agree. Last I heard spring training and AAA didn’t count all that much. I’m sure the Yankees will be very hurt that he won’t accept a AAA assignment if he clears waivers.

Hey, if I just lost an $18,500 a day job, I would be pissed too. The hard reality is he was the last guy on the end of the bullpen bench. Seeeeee Ya!!!

Tomko has always sucked. He’s an idiot for being upset. Too bad he won’t end up in Boston.

How can he say he pitched great and didn’t have a chance?!? He had a 5.23 ERA in almost 21 innings pitched and his last real big chance to pitch relieving CC down in Florida was a disaster and the only reason we lost is because he gave up two HRs to the Marlins.

He wanted to pitch, he didn’t. I think only Angel Berroa played less without a DL trip. Maybe he would have done better if he’d been used more, though I don’t blame the Yanks for relying heavily on the kids.

I suspect some writers are framing the quotes with more incindiary language, because “Tomko rips Yanks” plays better than “Tomko leaves disappointed.”

I just think that if he expected more from the Yankees, he was deluding himself. He signed with a club that had a ton of options in the bullpen, got a chance, and flopped in a few big spots. He then sat for a while, and was released in favor of a younger player. I’m just not sure why he is surprised.

He didn’t do well in the time he had and he proved he couldn’t handle pitching in New york… When you are in an AL East pennant battle you can’t afford to run a guy out with 5+ ERA in important situations because you hope more innings will help him get down to a 4 ERA at best. He is the old odd man out and doesn’t want to admit he was never good and is most likely done at the major league level.
