Red Sox to acquire Victor Martinez, per twitter
No word on the price yet, but hopefully the Indians were able to extract some valuable players/prospects from Boston. The tweet is from Bob Nightengale, a USA Today writer. Of the big 3 of Halladay, Adrian Gonzalez, and Martinez, V-Mart would likely have had the lowest cost, and is not the same caliber player as the other two. This is a nice addition to the struggling Boston lineup (depending on the price, of course), but as a Yankee fan, it’s hardly a reason to panic. I imagine Martinez will spend a lot of time at 1st base, with Youkillis moving to 3rd. He will probably catch occasionally as well, to spell the gritty Jason Varitek.
Now let’s see if the Yankees make any moves in the next 2 hours, perhaps to solidify the 5th spot in the rotation (Justin Duchscherer?). I’m not expecting anything major at this point, and since Boston seems to be out of the Hallady picture with this trade, I don’t see the Yankees overpaying Toronto in a panic to keep him away from Boston.

V-Mart has been struggling since early June. I don’t really get the move for the Sox. Mike Lowell is hitting over .400 since the break. Are they going to take his bat out of the lineup? Youkilis has played poor defense at third, too. It’s just a strange acquisition, in that it probably cost them a good group of players yet he might not even play everyday unless they’re willing to change catchers and move Varitek to the bench.
Assuming they are giving up Bucholz in the deal, I like this a lot for the Yankees. Unless Martinez plays catcher for the Red Sox, the incremental benefit he will give them playing over Ortiz, Lowell or Youk is not going to be significant/if anything at all. Particularly when the alternative might have been Halladay going to the Red Sox, I like this a lot. I’ve lost a little sleep thinking about a Sox rotation with Beckett, Lester and Halladay.
I hope it’s Bucholz, Masterson and Hagadone
Deal looks to be done- Martinez for Masterson, Hagadone and Price (AA pitcher from Rice). Very surprised.
If Hagadone pans out it’s an okay move for Cleveland. He’s far off, though.
Man that seems like a light package for the Indians to accept… bet there is a secret suitcase of money changing hands.
Further this would mean that Boston is still in position to deal for Halladay.
This sucks! This upgrades the Red Sox line up and weakens our strengths because they get closer to our offensive level and we only get worse with pitching depth by doing nothing and waiting for Joba to sit.
Don’t try and convince yourself that Martinez sucks he doesn’t! In fact at catcher his production is huge and if they switch him to 1B they won’t wear him down catching and his offense will only improve this hurts us if for no other reason we didn’t upgrade pitching at all not at all!
