.!.

Stormbreaker movie Here are three quick news items before tonight’s game:

  • Via Joel Sherman’s Twitter feed, it appears as though Roy Halladay will not be a Yankee come the trade deadline (surprised?). According to Sherman, unnamed Yankee “officials” told him that there is “zero chance” that they will trade for the Toronto ace. The “officials” noted that they wouldn’t trade for Halladay for the same reasons they didn’t acquire Johan Santana (i.e., money and the loss of young talent). Obviously, it doesn’t matter what unnamed sources say today because we’ve seen how meaningless these reports can ultimately be, however, the reasoning here is pretty sound. If they didn’t do it for Santana, why do it for the older Halladay?
  • The Blue Jays have released The Perfect Storm the movie the once great B.J. Ryan after a miserable first half. Ryan’s fastball has slowed considerably this season and he hasn’t been able to regain his form. Joel Sherman (him again) wonders if he can be a lefty specialist for a contender—like the Yankees, perhaps—although his stuff just isn’t what it was even a year ago. It would be a low-risk move, although one would think that something is physically wrong with him. Still, I’d probably pick up Ryan before trading for John Grabow.
  • And finally, from the NY Post, we learn that Jesus Montero has been selected to be in the Double-A Eastern League All-Star Game (he’s a late addition and will replace the injured Josh Thole). Good stuff from the Yankees’ best hitting prospect.

When I saw on the wire that BJ Ryan had been released, that was my thought too, why not give him a shot, especially with Marte still in question.

    • Steve S. says:

I like it, if for no other reason we would be cornering the market on pitchers who go by their first two initials.

CC, AJ and now BJ. Now if we could only get JP Howell, we’d be unstoppable.

Have you seen his delivery now post surgery? The man looks uncomfortable, it’s just not in the arm slot it was before. I personally hope they do not experiment with him.

A Halladay trades makes very little sense. Only because it’s the exact same situation with Santana. Only difference is we have pretty good starting pitching and an ace already.

Why would Cashman give up the farm (which it will take. Riccardi is trading in the division and will likely ask for more) to a team in the division AND have to pay Halladay?
He didn’t do for Santana when they really NEEDED an ace. But for some reason he’s going to do it now when they don’t really need an ace?
And the Yankees/Cashman has worked so hard to build up this system. And he just going to tear it all apart for a… although great and best pitcher in the game but he is 32 y/o pitcher? I just don’t see it.

I don’t see Halladay to the Yankees or the Red Sox for that matter. These 2 teams will only be in it to drive up the price for each other. Which ironic enough that was the same situation with Santana too.
When push came to shove neither club was willing to sell the farm.

It makes sense if you want to win the WS this year and next year. Which the Yanks (of course) do.

      • Chris H. says:

While I agree that the Yankees should be hesitant about any such trade, I do want to point out that Santana and Halladay are different guys. I think the Yankees were weary of Santana’s fastball declining with age (it’s dropped about 3 mph since 2006) which would make his changeup not nearly as effective as he got older. With Halladay, he actually induces more groundballs, a technique that will work well as he continues to age (a concept that one would think of while drafting an extension for him). In fact, when you think about Halladay, he’s such a strange pitcher. His K/9 jumped tremendously from 2007 to 2008. Right now it’s the highest it’s been—at 7.60—since 2001 (in 2007 it was 5.50). He’s striking out more people as he has gotten older. Strange stuff.

our team with halladay = maddux, glavine, smoltz. add in joba/hughes/ace, pettite and wang and we’d be unstoppable. our bullpen would get awesome amounts of rest with 2 guys that can throw 120 pitches everyday 5 days.

i remember cashman also saying the yankees aren’t interested in tex. cashman would be an idiot not to covet halladay, but at this point, the yankees can play around with their chips and move them only if the price is right. if it takes hughes, romine, melancon/robertson or something similar in talent, i’d pull the trigger.

  4. Trevor says:

Bit of a different situation. Teixeira only cost money and draft picks. This is prospects AND money.
And Halladay has never seen October. So it’s no guarantee that regular season greatness will translate to playoff baseball.
What looks like a slam dunk on paper doesn’t mean a hill of beans when the actually players take the field.

Ex: Remember when the Yankees in the off season was suppose to have arguably the best rotation in baseball 1-5?
