Pete Abe is reporting that Brett Gardner is headed to the DL witha broken left thumb. He injured the digit sliding into second yesterday, and will spend two weeks in a cast prior to being reevaluated. Brett had become an important member of the team, and was becoming more vital as Melky continued to struggle. Jon Albaladejo is replacing him today, while Austin Jackson, Shelley Duncan, and John Rodriguez are the options to take his spot for the duration of Brett’s injury. If the Yanks want someone to fill the role Brett was playing, we may see A-Jax for a few weeks.

Of the three, I like the things A-Jax can bring to the table. Remember, he is replacing Brett not some slow guy. I would want someone to come close to him as a defensive player with great speed and good hitting ability. Would A-Jax struggle as Melky and Brett did?
He strikes out a lot but, as with most younger players, he hits into the gaps well, can steel a base or two, has a little power… power, we already have.
My biggest concern is…is he ready or would they be pushing him. I am leaning to the side of waiting until the call-up in Sept. without pressure, he may play very well.

Girardi mentioned that Jackson probably won’t get the call. Instead, he said either Shelley Duncan or John Rodriguez would fill-in, if need be.

Thank you, I was wondering about that. He could use the time to play at AAA first.
What are your thoughts on Pena coming up as an OF? He is a very good athlete but, can he play the OF enough? He is the closest thing we have for Brett (other then A-Jax) and we know he can play.

great time for A-Jax or Duncan.

It should be Duncan he has proved he has power and if he can hit even .270 while Brett is gone he is worth keeping on the roster over Ransom when Gardner returns… Now way Austin gets called up I think they really want him to develop his bat so he doesn’t go thorugh the same hitting slump Melky did.

    • Chris H. says:

Definitely. Leave him down there, let him get ready. I wouldn’t mind seeing J-Rod over Duncan, but I feel like Shelley has earned it.

      • The other Chris H says:

Yeah I feel some sort of attachment to Shelley Duncan as a fan haha I know he isn’t great but watching him try to stay at the big league level is almost endearing in some weird way, however with that said I really hope he has learned to hit breaking balls.

        • Chris H. says:

Ha, agreed. J-Rod is probably a better option since he has some speed, but yea, Shelley is Shelley and it’s nice to see him do well.

I didn’t know that Chris Duncan was Shelley’s brother until the other day when he got traded to the Red Sox talk about a raging rivalry Shelly and Scranton Vs Chris and Pawtucket haha.
