From Tyler Kepner Along Came Polly movie :

Murphy’s Romance release

“I’m very comfortable with the decision we made back with the Santana situation,” he said. “Right now, we’ve got Sabathia where the Santana money is, I’ve got a center fielder in Melky, I’ve got Phil Hughes performing for us, and I’ve got Swisher in right, which Jeffrey Marquez was in the deal to help me get.

Death Sentence “So right now, I believe the organization is in a better position because of that type of decision-making. I know people still like to debate it. Debate all they want, I think it was the smart and right move, and we’re stronger than we would have been with one player and the money attached to the player without all the extra players we have now.”

The discussion question is very simple: Do you agree with Cashman? I do, but I can see how people might look at the Santana situation and ask if prospect-hugging when the best pitcher in baseball hits the trade market at 27 is entirely prudent. It worked out, but CC could have signed elsewhere and the Yankees would be left empty-handed. Is holding on to young talent always the right move?

  1. Will C says:

I totally agree with Cashman and his words and continue strategy I agree with

  2. Yankee1010 says:

I’m 100% with Cashman. I was then and I am now. Not to mention the fact that Santana has certainly regressed while pitching in the crappy NL.

  3. DaveinMD says:

Cashman is 100 percent correct and we’d be wise to remember this when discussing any potential Halladay deal. Its the exact same thing.

  4. oldpep says:

Agreed. I think from the time of the non-trade forward, Hughes value alone will exceed Santana’s.

It’s amazing…where are all the Cashmam haters? When he is right, he is right…when he is wrong he is———–!
There were and still are some, that think the non-trade was bad news. I for one, am all for looking past the bright lights and look for the gem hiding in our own system. We don’t need (or want) a bunch of 32/35 year olds taking up roster room with long team contracts, do we?
I like the way Cash thinks; “What’s good for the team NOW and the FUTURE”. So yes, keep the young guys unless a deal blows the team away and even then think hard and long on it.
Our minor teams are better stocked then they have ever been…let’s see what we have before trading them away.
