Yankee GM Brian Cashman today. Brian was down in Trenton for the Eastern League All Star game. Here are some highlights:

The River Wild release

- Wants to solve issues internally first. Is talking to other clubs, but wouldn’t even mention the name Roy Halladay, citing tampering rules.

- When asked if anyone is “untouchable” he said that some players are more tradable than others. In a word no.

- Looks like Sergio Mitre is going to get the fifth spot. Nothing solidified, but he praised his staff for finding Mitre, and mentioned Girardi’s experience with him in Florida. Expect him to get that fifth slot.

- Wants two lefties out of the bullpen (kudos Frank Russo for having that for us already). Marte, of course, is starting a rehab assignment, but, in my opinion, that is the one area we can expect to see a deal.

– He mentioned Ivan Nova quite a few times and sounds very excited about his development this year. Since his promotion from Trenton opponents are only hitting .190 against him in the International League. Could we see him in the Yankees bullpen before too long?

- Sees Montero as a catcher more and more everyday. In his words we “always knew he was a hitter”, but “the catching situation changes things drastically”. Remember, a catcher that can hit, like Montero, is so valuable in a lineup (see Mike Piazza). It would be very painful to give him up in a deal.

Piecing all of this together, it would appear Cash’s position is the same as mine. No one is untouchable when you’re talking about one of the top 2-3 pitchers in Baseball. But Montero is about as close as there is to being untouchable in the Yankee system. I think we all expected Mitre to get the next start, it was clearly a mistake to start Aceves against the Twins, and we could have won 1-2 of the Angels’ games had we had Aceves available out of the bullpen.

If Montero and Joba, along with some secondary guys could get you Halliday, you have to do it.
Yankees are ridiculously deep in catching and Cashman could be blowing smoke about Montero’s catching ability anyway.
You have Posada 2 more years and Cervelli.I view Romine as our best catching prospecy anyway, long term and we brought in 2 more big prospects in the draft & Intl signings.
If Halliday brought you 2-3 WS spots over next 3-4-5 years, losing Montero would be well worth it.

    • Steve S. says:

I don’t think he’ll include Montero, unless he gets to keep Joba or Hughes. As you said, its a position of depth so I would think its the type of thing that wouldn’t hold up a deal.

Plus, most scouts don’t think Montero’s a Catcher, anyway.

    • Moshe Mandel says:

Losing Montero would be worth it, but not Montero and Hughes/Joba. Halladay is no guarantee to bring WS spots, as my previous post illustrates. Further, there is no big time pitcher that has costed 2 top 5 in all of baseball type prospects- not Haren, not Mulder, not Hudson, not Santana, not Sabathia. None of them required more than a Joba, A-Jax, Romine, Betances type deal. None.

      • Steve S. says:

These deals always cost less than on July 31st than they do in the weeks leading up to it.

Unless of course, you’re dealing with Omar Minaya and trading Bartolo Colon.

    • Chris H. says:

I think Larry just read PA’s piece over at LoHud…

      • Steve S. says:

I get a kick out out journalists who criticize fans for being overly reactionary, who then offer the Sun and Moon as a reaction to the fans who want to send Melky+IPK. It’s the same, tired old act year after year.

Any Met fan who would have called WFAN offering Carlos Gomez and three AAAA pitchers for Johan Santana would have been laughed off the station. Yankee fans who called WFAN wanting to trade Soriano for A-Rod were similarly derided. Same act, over and over and over and over.

  2. Steve S. says:

I can’t back this up with much, but I have some reason to suspect Halladay might steer himself to the Yanks.

AJ Burnett said during his press conference when he was signed by the Yanks that he was already recruiting Roy to come here, which caught my attention at the time. Now he wants to be traded. Halladay’s said repeatedly he wants to go to a winner. He made a comment about “Not having to face Jeter, A-Rod and Tex anymore” during the AS Game, although the context was something NY related. JP Ricchardi has also said he will deal Roy within the division.

The pieces all seem to be in place, and the Yanks rarely lose out on a pitcher they really want. Just a hunch.

    • Moshe Mandel says:

I have a hunch that they end up with a top flight guy a notch below Halladay, and keep all three of their untouchables. Someone like Lee or maybe Bedard, or someone out of the blue. When healthy, Bedard has performed equally well as any pitcher in baseball over the last 3 seasons.

      • daneptizl says:

Any idea on how much either of those would cost? Since Bedard isn’t exactly a model of health, maybe Romine, McAllister, + a higher ceiling/low level guy?

  3. DaveinMD says:

I would not trade Montero for anything. This is the equivalent of trading a minor league Mickey Mantle. That was the last time we had a hitting prospect this good. Halladay is 32. I’d rather not get him and sign King Felix when the time comes. I’d stop running this team for the short term.

    • Moshe Mandel says:

I think that he should not be untouchable if he was the only A+ type prospect going over, but on a sentimental level, the Yankees have not developed a hitter of this caliber since Posada and Jeter. It has been a while.

      • DaveinMD says:

He’s a better hitting prospect than those guys were. They were probably better overall prospects. Still I hate this mindset of trading away prospects of his caliber for a pitcher in his thirties.

Is it better to have Santana or Sabathia and Hughes. In a few years, we could ask the question, is it better to have Halliday or King Felix, Joba and Montero.

        • Moshe Mandel says:

Totally agree. Even this season, I might prefer Joba and Lee to Halladay.

        • The other Chris H says:

How would the Yankees land Felix Hernandez without giving up both Joba and Hughes? He is the untouchable the Mariners are holding on to.

          • DaveinMD says:

He will be a free agent after next season. I guarantee he goes to free agency. He’s going to get a contract that will Sabathia look like pennies.

            • The other Chris H says:

And some how you expect the Yankees to trade more for him than they would for Halladay and then have the two highest paid pitchers in the game and the highest paid position player in the game…?

  4. Leftylarry says:

Chris H.: I think Larry just read PA’s piece over at LoHud…

    What is Lohud?
