Aceves to start in Wang's place
Peter Abraham is reporting that Alfredo Aceves will be starting in Chien-Ming Wang’s place in the Yankee rotation. Aceves has been a huge asset to the Yankee bullpen this season, going 5-1 in 40 innings with a 2.03 ERA, a 0.93 WHIP, and a k:bb ratio of nearly 5:1. In his last outing, Aceves pitched 4 innings of 1-hit ball, striking out 5 and allowing 0 walks.
Truant Officer Donald rip With a dominant 4-inning outing like that, it stands to reason that Aceves should be able to handle throwing 5-6 innings as a starter, and he should be able to fill in capably for the injured Wang. Aceves will be missed in the Yankee bullpen, as his versatility and ability to throw multiple innings is very valuable, but maybe Phil Hughes could occupy that role somewhat (though Girardi seems to have him locked in as more of a 1-inning setup man). It’s unclear how long Aceves will be in the rotation, but hopefully, Wang will come back healthy and effective. I think Aceves is a much better solution than Sergio Mitre, Kei Igawa, or Brett Tomko, who were the possible alternatives.

I would have liked to see Mitre get a shot and leave the pen as is, but I get this move. Being that Mitre does not have a great history, Aceves gives you a better chance to win every fifth day.
I completely disagree. Having a good starter every 5th day is much more important than a role as a middle reliever. The pen is good enough as is. It will be even better once Bruney gets his stuff together.
Right, that’s why I begrudgingly agree. Since it is only one start until the ASB, I thought it might make sense to leave Ace in the pen and try Mitre for that one start.
I think Mitre is a classic AAAA player. Much like Igawa. He’d get pounded and Aceves would have to throw 4 innings anyway.
Why do you think that? What do you know about Mitre? I’m not trying to be an a-hole, but seriously, what makes you think Mitre is a AAAA player when he has barely played in the minors above the age of 28.
I would imagine that Melancon gets a call up now?
No, this is just shifting around players already on the roster. When Wang was DL’d, Alby was called up.
I’d like to see it, but Alby has a better chance to give us length (sinker/slider guy), which we’ll need with Aceves starting.
Alby isn’t much.Frankly, I think Igawa deserved the shot.Pitched well again yesterday.
Igawa can’t get major league hitters out. He is what he is.
Igawa deserves another shot.
I wouldn’t mind Igawa in a long relief role. I think he could be better than Tomko, and having another lefty wouldn’t be a terrible thing either.
No he doesn’t. He showed what he is when was up. He had plenty of chances. He wasn’t even a very good pitcher in Japan.
