-The Yanks are playing truly awful Baseball lately. After heading into Boston with a head of steam, they have managed just a 3-6 record, and even the 2 wins were gifts by Luis Castillo and Elijah Dukes. You have to wonder if there’s a hangover effect from getting swept by the Red Sox.

-Phil Hughes is happy in his new bullpen role. NY Post Alien Agent release reports:

“I just happen to be throwing the ball well and giving us innings when we need them, regardless of what my role is. It really doesn’t make a difference as long as I can get in there and get some quality innings,” said Hughes, who seems settled into his role as what he calls a utility pitcher.

“It’s been fine. For the most part it’s pretty comfortable. . . . I’m just taking it a day at a time. Right now I’m in the bullpen, and that’s where I’m going to stay until I hear something different. I’m not waiting around and assuming something’s going to happen.”

-Jesus Montero was knocked out of yesterday’s game in Trenton due to a foul tip.

-Brett Gardner (aka Gritt Gutner) is fine after running into the outfield wall yesterday. Just got his bell rung.

-Fans who had seats to yesterday’s game can exchange them for Bleacher or Grandstand seats for any non premium (Red Sox/Mets/OT Day) game for the rest of this season or 2010. It doesn’t matter if you used yesterday’s tickets or not. Good job by the Yanks taking care of the 40,000+ that paid for seats they didn’t use yesterday.

I am tired of watching Justin Verlander-John Lester and Edwin Jackson all hit 95-98 consistenly on their fastball why does Jobas suck so much where is 95mph when we will see it-as John Flaherty said right now his fastball is avergae. I want to see A verlander, lester, jackson type of pitcher not this garbage of late

On the one hand, Joba’s era suggests that he’s pitching quite effectively despite his lack of velocity. But, on the other hand, I think we all want more than “quite effectively”, so I share your frustration. It does seem though that more than his lack of velocity is his control that is hurting him. The walks are turning into runs and running up his pitch count. On the bright side, he’s got lots of room for improvement and with a sub 4 era, that is reason for optimism.

There was an event last night in Maine that Stump Merrill was to give the keynote address at, but he ended up being unavailable because he was called down to Tampa at the last minute. I believe he is still a special assistant to Cashman so it makes me think something could be brewing. Any rumors you know of?

How much longer are Yankees fans going to give A-Rod a free pass on his abyssmal offensive showing this season? He’s had more than enough at bats to move beyond the excuse that he’s still in spring training mode. Just because he has a barely respectable OPS should not be enough to excuse how badly he’s hurting the team in the cleanup spot. If he continus on this path, it won’t be long before his numbers and David Ortiz’s are very similar. Strange thing is that with Ortiz people were wondering if his career was over not long ago. I’m not suggesting that with A-Rod, I thought it was absurd for people to be saying that about Ortiz given his age and how just last year he had a decent season. But give me a break, how is it possible that is not something we are debating here by now? It sure feels to me like the emperor has no clothes and I’m trying to point it out.
