Chad Jennings, on the ball as always, gives us a long list of updates from Mark Newman. We’ve got good news from Kevin Russo, Sergio Mitre and Dellin Betances, but bad news that neither Jairo Heredia or Bradley Suttle are close to making their 2009 debuts.

I’ll let you read it. The most interesting part to me concerns Ivan Nova. The Yankees are considering promoting him to Triple-A, ahead of Zach McAllister. The Yankees have always been really high on Nova, while the rest of us remained skeptics. A 3.26 ERA as a Double-A rookie will erase healthy skepticism quickly.

Does Sergio Mitre potentially have a spot on the Yankees when he returns? His career 5.36 ERA and 81 ERA+ make Brett Tomko look good.

Why so skeptical on Nova? I guess some other clubs like him, as he was taken in the Rule V draft, as far as I recall.

Until about a month ago, he had never really put it all together and executed on the mound. He was very hittable, didn’t get strikeouts, walked too many guys. A serial underachiever.

So then what is it that has clubs enamored with him? Is his stuff really that good? It doesn’t make sense to me that he would be ahead of McCallister.

        • EJ Fagan says:

He’s older than McAllister. The Yankees can be a little less delicate with him. They also might want to float him as trade bait.

That makes sense, although I cant imagine getting a ton for a guy that they left open for the Rule V draft and the team that selected him returned. It suggests that he is not a legit prospect to the Yankees, nor a guy who could stick in the majors now. He seems to occupy this middle ground that does not hold much value.
