Draft Morning Rumors, Courtesy of Nomaas
Lane Meyer of Nomaas’s draft blog has some tasty tidbits this morning, with some interesting predictions of players who might fall in the first round. In addition to the players I mentioned on my board, it sounds like Jacob Turner, perhaps the top prep righty, could also fall for requesting a Porcello bonus, and like Porcello, he has a UNC commitment. Turner would rank highly on my board, ahead of Purke to be sure, and possibly higher than that.
The Dying Gaul trailer What Dreams May Come dvd Meyer also sees Slade Heathcott as a player with some serious helium, something that seems to be the case, as he has gone from being a 2nd-rounder at best into first-round consideration, and has been predicted by Keith Law to be the Yankees’ pick. In addition, Meyer is, like me, not super impressed with Cal’s Brett Jackson, and would be upset if he was the player taken at #29. I’m leaving in a few minutes, will be back just before the draft starts, so this can be a draft chatter thread until I’m back.
My updated first-round wish list, expanded to include some of the guys I mentioned in previous posts.
- Tanner Scheppers
- Aaron Crow
- Jacob Turner
- Kyle Gibson
- Donavan Tate
- Matt Purke
- Slade Heathcott
- Matt Hobgood
- Tommy Joseph
- Matt Davidson
- Tyler Skaggs
- Tony Sanchez
- James Paxton
- Andy Oliver
- David Renfroe
- Luke Bailey
- Brett Jackson

What’s not to like about Brett Jackson?
He has good size, speed and a good arm.Hits with power and has the swing to match.
You can’t hit a homerun if you can’t make contact
I’d be incredibly excited if we could grab 2 of your top 10 and three overall. I’ve seen a few mock drafts having the Red Socks taking Sanchez and I think that’s a best case scenario for us. Hopefully guys like Purke, Turner and Scheppers drop like a rock due to demands where the Yankees can come in and clean house. I’ll go for the optimistic Yankee draft of
1-Crow
2-Scheppers
4-Renfoe
5-Bailey
6-Purke
7-some slot signing
8-Tate
Of course they won’t sign them all but adding Tate and Renfoe instantly gives us some high-risk, high-reward hitters (which we somewhat lack right now) and we’d be picking up a few super high-ceiling arms. And yes, I know this isn’t happening
Still hoping for Mike Trout of NJ.
Sounds like he’ll go somewhere in the teens, at worst to Los Angeles with their back to back picks right before us.
Yeah, he wont be around, although there have been rumblings that he wants top 10 money.
That’s what some say about AJax.
I don’t know if Brett Jackson is worthy of a first rd grade or a 3rd rd grade, I’m an NFL draftnick, not a MLB one yet but I do know one thing, big strong guys who can hit, run and throw often make good ML players.
I liked the looks of his swing.
He can’t hit well enough right now to justify a first rounder. He actually profiles a lot like A-Jax did when drafted- great athlete, needs to learn how to hit. That sounds like a guy you pay overslot in the later rounds, not a first round pick.
Renfroe is likely to be their second rounder. His demands are too high for his talent, so he wont be taken before them.
Yeah I realize that but in my draft of optimism, Renfoe’s salary demand drops him to us in the 4th round as they passed on him in the second due to the availability of Scheppers
