From Pete Abe’s Mailbag:

Ralph writes: Everyone has their own breaking point. I’ve been accepting of all the changes at the Stadium this year. My breaking point came with every strikeout getting a P.C. Richard’s whistle over the loudspeaker and every stolen base getting a “Gotta Go to Mo’s.”

Answer: I’m with you, Ralph. The Yankees were so sanctimonious about not selling the name of the Stadium and then they went and sold everything else. What is accomplished on the field should not be commercialized.

It is funny. If the team advertises the fact that they did not sell the name, it is sanctimonious. If they actually had sold the name, they would be greedy. The team cannot win. Advertising in the Stadium is one of the ways to defray costs and help the team pour money into the club. While most clubs sell naming rights to the stadium, the Yankees decided not to do so for the sake of tradition. I do not begrudge them trying to make up for that money in other areas, even if commercializing events in the game seems a bit distasteful.

If Modells and P.C. RIchards help us beat the Red Sox for players like Tex, I can live with it.Revenue has to come from somehwere.Yankees are NOT a non-profit.

I can’t believe people think this kind of advertising is effective. What next, the W.B.Mason fat guy selling peanuts? That being said, if they can sell it, what the heck.

I’ve gone to about a dozen games this year and I can honestly say I haven’t noticed the whisle or the gotta go to Mo’s song yet. If you don’t concern yourself with it, you can ignore it.

And on that topic, I really don’t get the uproar over YMCA and Cotton Eye Joe. Are they stupid? Sure but people seem to enjoy it and most of the time I’m making my way to a concession stand or bathroom when they are playing. Some people just like to complain.

Who cares about having the whistle after every strikeout? It’s not like the Yankees are the only team to have things like this. Like it was previously stated, if all of those whistles keep Tex in New York instead of Boston or Baltimore, then this guy is happy

Compared to European sports, this is nothing. Look at this:
