From Pete Abe:

Discipline has been issued to the two starting pitchers from the Tuesday, June 2nd game between the Texas Rangers and the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium. Bob Watson, Vice President of On-Field Operations for Major League Baseball, made the announcement.
Yankees pitcher A.J. Burnett has been suspended for six games and fined an undisclosed amount for intentionally throwing a pitch in the head area of Nelson Cruz of the Rangers during the top of the fifth inning. Burnett’s six-game suspension had been scheduled to begin this afternoon, when New York continues to host Texas, but he has elected to appeal. Thus, his suspension will be held in abeyance until the process is complete.

While I do not like it, this is consistent with recent disciplinary measures taken by the league. Josh Beckett received a similar suspension earlier this year and had it knocked down by one game upon appeal. If the suspension does get reduced to five games, the Yankees could just slot Hughes in to the rotation for one turn, allowing AJ to make his next start, albeit one day late. The reason I do not like these suspensions is that it prevents players from policing the game themselves. If AJ had not thrown at Cruz, there would still be a problem between the two clubs that would just fester and possibly turn into something larger. Instead, it is over, and the teams can go back to playing baseball. Furthermore, the fact that Padilla was only fined seems a bit silly, considering that he started the whole mess.

It had to happen. MLB seems to be more willing to hand out suspensions this year.

At least we know that Hughes will get one more start in the near future.

    Ridiculous.
AJ did what needed to be done.

I agree, the response was unbalanced. Heck, the game umpire didn’t even seem that upset. If AJ had wanted to hit Cruz, he would have.
