From Sam Borden we get a cornucopia of news about the Yankees roster:

1) Brian Bruney will return tomorrow for the start of the Yankees series with the Orioles. I think that although Edwar, Aceves, and Albie have options, Jose Veras will be DFA’d. The Yankees have thrown him into important spots with regularity and he has repeatedly come up short. I think they risk losing him rather than sending down a more effective reliever. Joe Girardi said that Bruney will go back to pitching the 8th inning immediately. Thank god for that. A pen with Bruney in the 8th, Coke and Aceves in the 7th, and eventually Damaso Marte available for a stretch of tough lefties, does not look that bad.

2) Chien-Ming Wang is going to throw a side session in front of the Yankee staff tomorrow to determine whether he is ready to return. I bet they give him one more minor league start, which means two more MLB starts for Phil Hughes. Hopefully both of them make use of the opportunity.

3) Steven Jackson was claimed by the Pirates today. I liked Jackson, and I think he has a future as a decent middle reliever, especially in the NL. The Pirates now have Jackson, Eric Hacker, Ross Ohlendorf, Jeff Karstens, and Dan McCutcheon. I guess we are going to find out if Scranton could actually win 80 games in the majors.

4) Brett Gardner hurt his shoulder on the play at the plate yesterday and is unavailable tonight. He is listed as day-to-day.

Not just because of tonight as Veras looked pretty rotten as well, but I’d send Edwar down. I still think Veras can be good he just has to put it back together.

    - Great site by the way. You guys are doing a really good job here.

Thanks. I agree on Edwar. As I said at RAB, when Veras is off he doesnt know where it is going, but neither does the hitter. It leads to walks, but rallies built on walks can be stopped by a pitching change. When Edwar is off, the ball leaves the park, there is no way to mitigate his poor play.

I think with Veras you see his good starts when his pitches break down a couple inches opposed to the right where they travel across the plate. I’m not a pitching coach but you’d think that has something to do with how his fingers cross the ball. He jerks so much to create velocity that, more than likely, plays with that trajectory. You’d think that he should be able to fix that. If and when he does we know he is pretty nasty (i.e. that walk off winner in extra innings that Melky won after he went three). Let’s go Dave Island!

Scranton … 80 games … pretty funny. Moshe, didn’t think that you had that cold blooded humor in you. Joe
