According to a NY Post report, Alex Rodriguez will return to the team – and the lineup – Friday night against the Baltimore Orioles.

A conference call was scheduled between Rodriguez and members of the Yankee front office for this afternoon, and A-Rod was going to tell the organization how he felt and what his preference was for when to return from hip surgery. But the understanding going into the game, according to two sources, was that if there were no problems in today’s intra-squad game, then he would rejoin the Yanks tomorrow and play.

Of course Rodriguez will help in getting the Yankees back on their winning ways but fans should be reticent to expect an immediate impact as a week in Extended Spring Training games is not the equivalent of major league pitching.

Maybe one day this season the Yankees will actually have their full roster of players on the field at the same time. With Wang, Posada, Nady, Bruney and even Marte currently on the disabled list, it doesn’t appear likely.

One should not expect too much from A-Rod at this time, although most will. He will take the place of Posada but, with little or no real game hitting practice. We have all seen guys come back and go like gang busters, conversely (sad to say) the opposite is also true.
Let’s just be happy to have him back in the line-up, with Matsui hitting behind him it still will be better then Pena…I hope!

Welcome back Alex, the team really needs your bat and presence in the lineup.
