Minors Recap, 5/26
Scranton’s game against Syracuse was postponed
Trenton batters New Britain, 11-0
- Zach McAllister put together another strong start, giving up just 4 hits and 2 walks in 7 shutout innings, while striking out 5. This type of outing has been Zach’s MO over the past 2 years: not striking out tons of batters while limiting extra-base hits and walks. So far it’s worked for him, with a 1.91 ERA on the season.
- Kevin Whelan allowed a hit and struck out 1 in 2 scoreless.
- Eduardo Nunez was 4 for 4 with his 3rd homer of the year, raising his average to .302.
- Colin Curtis was 5 for 5 with a walk.
- Jorge Vazquez was 2 for 5.
- Kyle Anson was 2 for 3 with 2 walks.
Tampa defeats Fort Myers, 3-1 (7 innings)
- Lance Pendleton pitched well, giving up an unearned run on 3 hits and 2 walks in 6 1/3 innings, while striking out 5.
- Jesus Montero, catching, was 2 for 4 to raise his average to .329. He’s had a bit of a homer drought, not going deep since May 1. However, as long as he keeps the average high and the doubles coming, I’m not worried.
- Austin Romine was 1 for 4 with a double, dropping his average to .288. He’s having a very solid year offensively so far, though the low walk total is reason for concern.
- Damon Sublett was 1 for 2 with a double and 2 walks.
- Wady Runio and Brian Baisley were each 2 for 3.
Charleston beats Bowling Green, 9-4
- Andrew Brackman had an absolute meltdown with his control, but somehow escaped with only 3 runs allowed in 3 1/3 innings. The tall righty allowed just 1 hit but walked 10 (!) and also tossed 5 (!!!) wild pitches. I hope he’s not injured, but this loss of control is likely indicative of a pretty serious mechanical problem (injury-related or no). He seemed to have gotten the walks under control in his last few outings, and I was even calling for a promotion, but perhaps he needs more time to iron out his mechanics.
- Abe Almonte was 2 for 5 with a triple to raise his average to .273.
- Dan Brewer was 1 for 5 with 2 steals.
- David Adams was 2 for 3 with 2 walks, and is hitting .278.
- Melky Mesa continued his hot hitting, going 2 for 4 with a double and a walk. He’s hitting .394 in his last 10 games, and a promotion Tampa awaits if he keeps this up.
- Mike Lyon was 2 for 3 with 2 walks and 2 steals.
- Jose Pirela was 1 for 4 with a walk.
- Addison Maruszak was 2 for 3 with a double.
That’s all for tonight. Stay tuned for draft stuff tomorrow, and see which high school players I will become irrationally obsessed with.

Great recaps and reports. Love following the minors myself. Forward to middle of July….if Montero is still hitting around .330, you bring him up to Trenton right? Regardless of power output…..if he continues at this pace, I don’t see why you would hold him at Tampa for the entire season.
Brackman. Ouch.
Zach McAllister. Love the numbers.
