After retiring Brian Roberts, Joba was hit in the knee on a liner up the middle by Adam Jones. While Joba was able to record the out, he appeared to be in pain and was limping. After surrendering singles to Nick Markakis and Aubrey Huff, Girardi pulled Joba, replacing him with Alfredo Aceves.

I’ll update as I find out more about the injury, but to me it doesn’t look like he broke a bone. It’s most likely a bruise, which could cause swelling and stiffness.

Update: Joba’s X-Ray was negative, so it appears that it is just a bruised knee.  I doubt he misses a start, but if the Yankees want to be cautious maybe they will skip him.

It didn’t look bad, but knowing the Yanks luck so far, I see amputation in his future.

Anybody else think Aceves looks a bit like Jim Leyritz.

Hopefully AJ can go long tomorrow. That would be just what the doctor ordered.

This situation only enforces my point from yesterday. “Wang is coming back!!! OMG!!! What are we gonna do with Hughes?!!!” Duh. Teams need more than five starters throughout the season. Now you see why we need Hughes available at any time. I actually think the Yanks are better off just being overly cautious and skipping Joba’s next start so that they save some innings for later in the year. So far, I don’t see any effort from the Yanks to manage his innings creativly after all of Girardi’s talk in spring training of how they were gonna woek him creativly.

Oh, and i’m sure this whole thing woudln’t have happened had Joba just been left alone, in his “original role” as a dominant setup-man. I mean, it obviously happened in the first inning, not when he was out there throwing high heat in the eigth, “where his type of mentality is best suited.” This is all due to the irrational insistence from the Yanks to “experiment” with and “try out” Joba as a starter.
In the words of the great Wally Matthews, “The Yanks can use Joba in two ways, but why must they insist on using him the wrong way?!”
I don’t get it. Don’t get it at all.

Joba was invincible when he pitched in the 8th, so clearly he couldn’t have gotten injured. And I agree that this could end up being a nice way to limit Joba’s innings.

Why would Joba agree to be a dominant set up man, making $3 million /year when with 4 pitches he has the ability to develop into a $10-15 million starter eventually.
