Per Robert Pimpsner of Baby Bombers (posting on nyyfans.com), Charleston shortstop Carmen Angelini has been sent to extended spring training, and Jose Pirela will replace him.

I imagine Angelini is being sent to extended because he is struggling both offensively (.197 BA, 32 strikeouts in 33 games) and defensively, making many errors (though he hasn’t made as many recently).  Angelini, who received $1 million to sign out of high school and give up a scholarship to collegiate powerhouse Rice, has been a disappointment to say the least, hitting just .236 in Charleston last year and putting up a similarly pathetic performance this year.

It’s too early to call him a bust, but certainly getting demoted after repeating a level is not an encouraging sign for the 20 year-old shortstop.  Hopefully a little work in extended can get his swing and fielding together.  The talent is still there, and maybe putting him in full-season ball the season after drafting him really set him back.  No word on how long he will stay in extended or where he will end up next (Staten Island maybe?), but hopefully he can get his act together, because the Yankees certainly need shortstop prospects.

Pirela, only 19, is a decent prospect who signed for six figures out of Venezuela in 2006.  He didn’t do much offensively in the GCL last season, with a .234 BA and a .564 OPS.  I don’t expect much offensively from him in A-ball, but maybe he will surprise us.  He was likely ticketed for Staten Island until Angelini’s demotion.

That stinks. I think we need to forget about him until he shows even a shred of improvement. He has been awful.

Actually, Angelini is already a bust. Whether or not he can turn it around remains to be seen.
