Xavier Nady Injures Elbow
Xavier Nady had a “sharp pain” in his right elbow in the seventh inning and was taken out of the game.
He previously had elbow surgery.
MRI tomorrow.
UPDATE, 10:58 p.m.: Nady had Tommy John surgery on Sept. 29, 2001. He was injured tonight in the seventh inning when Carlos Pena singled and he threw the ball back to the infield.
“I’m definitely kind of nervous,” Nady said. “But I have to be optimistic. Hopefully it’s scar tissue breaking off. … It was very painful.”
If Nady is injured, the Yankees have a ready replacement in Superman Nick Swisher. But this greatly cuts down on their depth. Now you have to use Hideki Matsui and it’s harder to give Jorge Posada a day off and so on.
There are several options in AAA starting with Shelley Duncan and John Rodriguez. I would be shocked if they promoted Austin Jackson to be a bench player. He needs to play every day at this stage of his career.
Nady will have an MRI tomorrow morning and we should know more by the early afternoon. But it certainly sounds like bad news. For X’s sake, hopefully not.
I don’t see why the Yankees need to call up an outfielder if Nady heads to the disabled list. Melky Cabrera is on the roster already. John Rodriguez is an intriguing option considering how well he hit at the major league level, but I think that the Yankees should consider adding another bat to the infield. Cody Ransom is obviously a liability, and Ramiro Pena is a defensive replacement at best. How about Kevin Russo? He’s tearing the cover off the ball at Triple-A right now, and can play 2nd, 3rd, and left field. If we simply want a pinch hitter, Juan Miranda could be useful.
Thank God for Nick Swisher.

40 man roster is what matters i think. Russo isn’t on it. then again if the news on nady is real bad the 60 day may be an option. Question for you EJ: We have 24 pitchers and 16 position players on the 40 man. Is that a little to far one sided? I wasn’t sure.
I just posted this on RAB but wanted to post it hear for you guys to look at and I was worried it might get passed over at RAB
Stats question.
I was comparing fielding stats for melky vs gardner and melky clearly has alot more major league stats to go by. Gardner is mostly minor league numbers. So what I am wondering if it is safe to compare melky’s big league heavy numbers vs gardners mostly minor league numbers. Is fielding at the minor league level the same as fielding in the majors??
Thanks for the Help
I’m not an expert on these things, Matt, but I asked this same question a while back to Baseball Prospectus. If I remember correctly, there is a great deal of difference in defensive statistics in the minors vs. the majors. The depth they go into with UZRs and the Fielding Bible is just astounding, and not really possible on the minor league level. They pretty much chart every ball hit. I don’t think they can do that in every minor league park, particularly b/c the zones vary from park to park. There are something like 78 different zones on each field, and for UZR, they have to chart which zone each ball is hit to (and it’s even more complicated than that). I can’t see that happening in the minors for a while, yet
We may see Austin Jackson faster than I thought we would. Not right away, but the next time someone is banged up.
I would not bring up AJAX he is off to a good start and he just needs to develop his power and some fine tuning. If you bring him up and sit him on the bench or play hikm before he is ready it might be detrimental. I think the loss of Nady will not be so bad Between Cabrera, Damon and Matsui his stats can be replaced.
Agreed.
