Ortiz Yaps About Joba And Beanballs
From the NY Post:
With Chamberlain scheduled to start for the Yankees in the opener of a three-game series against the Red Sox, David Ortiz yesterday said the talented right-hander should avoid using Kevin Youkilis’ head as a bull’s-eye.
“None of that, man — just play the game the way it’s supposed to be, and that’s about it,” Ortiz said, referring to Chamberlain.
“This is a guy, as good as he is, the next step for him will be to earn respect from everybody in the league. He’s not a bad guy, but when things like that happen, people get the wrong idea.”
I think the following quote is appropriate here:
You shouldn’t throw stones if you live in a glass house
And if you got a glass jaw you should watch yo mouth…..
-Patiently Waiting, 50 Cent
Ortiz is running his mouth on an issue in which he has no legs to stand upon. The Red Sox have hit significantly more Yankees than the Yanks have hit BoSox over Ortiz’s time in Boston. I did not hear Ortiz chastising Josh Beckett for his headhunting antics against the Angels earlier this year, and he never came out against Pedro’s ridiculous actions. When you play with headhunters and never mention having a problem with their behavior, you lose all right to suddenly talk about how the game is supposed to be played. Ortiz is yapping because he does not want to get hit, not because he has some profound interest in the integrity and honor of the game. He either needs to include his own pitchers when he talks about headhunting, or he needs to quiet down and just play the game.

“Ortiz is yapping because he does not want to get hit, not because he has some profound interest in the integrity and honor of the game.”
IMO Ortiz is yapping because he wants to make it uncomfortable for Joba to pitch inside and he wants it to be in the back of the umps’ minds. That way maybe Joba will get tossed if he comes near a Red Sox hitter tomorrow night – whether it was intentional or not.
Cowardly as its finest.
That actually makes a lot of sense. I think Joba will go inside regardless- I mean, we have had this discussion before about Joba and he still continued to throw near Youk.
I wanted your opinion on Joba I watched his last start and I saw ALOT OF 89-93 MPH on the fast ball. Are they trying to toget Joba to pitch a little like AJ conserve the fast ball for wneh you need the extra velocit. If they are doing that is that the best way for Joba to pitch I wonder if ther holding him back to much.
The YES gun is slow, but you are right, he sat about 91-92 all game. I wonder a bit about that, but I think it is a combo of a slower pitch speed generally for starters and early season/ cold weather factors.
Agreed – I find it ridiculous that Red Sox pitchers can plunk Yankees over and over with seemingly no consequences, yet one Sox hitter gets brushed back and they cry like babies. Ortiz is done, anyway. I don’t know whether he’s undergoing some kind of ‘roid breakdown or his body just can’t take carrying all that weight anymore, but he’s falling apart before our eyes at only 33 years old – it’s sad.
I think he will have a couple of solid, Giambi-esque seasons before he is done, but I think his bat looks really slow, and his days as a superstar may be over. That said, i’m sure he will find a way to kill us a few times this year.
Can I get an amen from the chorus?
Amen!
Big Sloppy can cry me another river. Good pitchers mover assholes like Youk (especially assholes like Youk) off the plate. Get over it.
What kind of respect is he refering to? Not controlling both sides of the plate is that how great pitchers make their name around the league?
Did Gibson/Ryan/Pedro/Clemens… not have the respect of baseball? C’mon Sloppy get a clue.
I think it’s even more funny that he said “play the game the way it was meant to be played.” He’s a fulltime DH. DHing isn’t playing the game the way it was meant to be played. Why doesn’t he try and pick up a mit for once in his life and play the field.
who cares…people don’t care about the yankees or red sox..they both are boring..big sloppy is a beer league soft ball player…joba is a fat clown..a-roid is a prick, jeter is a prima donna who’s day is done, baseball is better without all of them
