WFAN is reporting that Xavier Nady will not require surgery on his injured right elbow. He will do rehab to nurse a strained ligament back to health, with the time frame still unclear. He will not miss the remainder of the season.
Update: Jon Heyman is reporting
that the rehab is likely to take “a period of weeks.” The fact that the discussion is not in terms of months seems like a good sign.
In an entirely unrelated note that I would like to mention here for no particular purpose, Ken Rosenthal checks in on Jim Edmonds:
Free agent Jim Edmonds, mindful of injuries to outfielders such as Vladimir Guerrero, Xavier Nady and Jose Guillen, has increased the intensity of his workouts, according to his agent, Paul Cohen. While Edmonds believes he can be ready in 2 1/2-3 weeks, executives are reluctant to wait even that long to fill more pressing needs.
Hmm, a power lefty bat in Yankee Stadium who can play all three outfield positions and will only cost money? Why would the Yankees want someone like that?

It also closes some of the doors to Austin Jackson.
If Cashman wouldn’t give up Mendoza to get Edmonds in his prime, why would he give up anything (even just money) to get him now?
This isn’t the first time we’ve passed on a useful player for no reason.
Cashman does some things very well. Things like this he often doesn’t do at all.
Agreed. he’s great on the primary stuff, not so great on filling in at the edges.
I wonder if the new treatment that Saito got last year is part of what the Yanks are doing with Nady.
For anyone who’s not familiar with it, it involved extracting a players own blood, raising the white blood cell count and injecting it directly into the elbow. Apparently, the white blood cells are what heal the ligaments and blood flow is generally poor in the area.
We probably would have heard about it, being that it is a unique procedure.
Another question is what role Nady takes when he comes back. I’ve heard he might be part of a Righty-Lefty DH platoon with Matsui and not play the field at all, for fear of re-injuring the elbow on a throwing play. Which of course, was how he injured it in the first place.
2 roster spots for 2 DH’s? Yikes.
I doubt this as well. For his long term value, he is probably better off getting the surgery, unless the rehab will actually heal it.
