Who's left in camp?
With the recent series of cuts, the Yankee major league camp is starting to look a little thinner. The following is my best guess as to who is left:
Catchers: Jorge Posada, Jose Molina, Francisco Cervelli, P.J. Pilittere
First Basemen: Mark Teixeira, Juan Miranda
Second Basemen: Robinson Cano, Doug Bernier
Shortstops: Derek Jeter (WBC), Ramiro Pena, Eduardo Nunez
Third Basemen: Cody Ransom, Angel Berroa, Justin Leone
Left Field: Johnny Damon, Todd Linden
Center Field: Brett Gardner, Melky Cabrera, Austin Jackson
Right Field: Xavier Nady, Nick Swisher, Shelley Duncan
Designated Hitter: Hideki Matsui
Starting Pitchers: C.C. Sabathia, Chien-Ming Wang, A.J. Burnett, Joba Chamberlain, Andy Pettitte, Phil Hughes, Phil Coke, Alfredo Aceves, Jason Johnson, Kei Igawa (reliever now?)
Long Relievers: Brett Tomko, Dan Giese
Relievers: Mariano Rivera, Jose Veras, Brian Bruney, Damso Marte, Anthony Claggett, Jon Albaladejo, David Robertson, Steven Jackson
As far as I can tell, that’s the whole group. Did I miss anyone?
You’re starting to see the Triple-A Scranton Yankees take shape here. I find it really interesting that Claggett and Jackson are getting as many looks as they are. Although I’m sure that the organization still values Melencon over them, its a great sign for them that they are sticking around while he was cut.
Phil Coke is still throwing starting pitcher innings. The Yankees may be serious about keeping him as a starter. Maybe Dunn made that great of an impression on them after all? Coke would make excellent trade bait.

Dunn was optioned out. I think Jackson and Claggett both have real chances to see time in NY this season. A little injury here, a little ineffectiveness there, and they could be in the Bronx.
Both Jackson and Claggett are on the 40 man roster, while Melancon is not, so they could quickly jump on the Chris Britton Shuttle if there is a need.
Good point as well. I think what we learned this spring is that they are taking it slow with Melancon. I would bet both of those guys get called up before him. Considering he didnt pitch on back to back days last year, it makes sense.
It should be noted that Claggett also rarely pitched back to back days. Its not really a Yankee thing for relief prospects.
Do you think Jackson could make the team out of camp?
I don’t think so. He hasn’t done much at Triple-A yet, and is still adjusting to relieving. I think that a second of the Tomko/Aceves/Giese trio is more likely.
Jackson should stillbe more likely than Claggett as he has at least experience at AAA. I wouldn’t trust Claggett in the Majors just yet.
I mean, it would still require a lot. You would need D-Rob, Alby, and Coke to tank to see any of these guys, really.
when is betances projected to have a serious chance at making the big club?
Late 2011 possibly, likely early 2012.
Trade Coke?
Why?
Marte wasn’t as good a pitcher at the end of last season and Lefty relievers are difficult to find.
Trading Coke would be foolish. He is a potential lefty specialist who can be a long man or spot starter too.
