The 45 Worst Contracts in MLB
Tim Dierkes of MLBTradeRumors put together a list of the 45 worst current contracts in baseball, and 3 Yankees make the dishonorable grade:
Jorge Posada, Yankees. Four years, $52MM ($13MM per year). Signed November of 2007.
Hideki Matsui, Yankees. Four years, $52MM ($13MM per year). Signed November of 2005.
Kei Igawa, Yankees. Five years, $46MM ($9.2MM per year). Signed in December of ’06, this was a clear and poorly thought-out response to Boston’s Daisuke Matsuzaka signing.
It is hard to argue with Igawa being on the list, although the posting fee was not part of his actual deal. Matsui is also deserving of mention, as injuries rather than ineffectiveness have made his contract an albatross. In regard to Jorge, it is too soon to judge the terms of his agreement. If he puts up three solid years going forward, that may turn into a very reasonable deal.
What do you think? Do any other Yankee contacts belong?

I think that the Matsui contract is really only this bad in hindsight. At the time he signed he had no where near the injury problems he has now. You could say the same thing about Posada, but I wouldn’t say he’s a bad contract yet.
Igawa, of course, is aweful. Even though the posting fee doesn’t go to him, the Yankees still have to pay that.
Certainly. Tim says the this list is based on hindsight rather than what was thought at the time.
How does Pavano not make the list?
He isn’t a current contract. Otherwise, he would be a lock.
I think the posado signing is bad only because of the years. He was an old catcher that had a career year; he probably won’t achieve anything close to that again. I thought we should have offered three years with a club option for the third year. I forgot we even had igawa still. lol
I disagree about Posada being a bad contract. Chances are pretty good he’ll be able to catch quite a few games this year, and when he’s behind the plate the offense is a lot better.
I also think he’s the de facto captain of the team, and there’s less lackadaisical play when he’s around.
I agree. You can’t call it a bad contract because the guy gets injured. If he has an Allstar year this year then its not a bad contract.
I can’t argue with any of those contracts, and I’m sure there would be quite a few more Yankees on this list a year ago with Pavano, Giambi, etc.
However…
I fail to see how Daisuke Matsuzaka doesn’t make this list. The Red Sox committed over $100 million to a guy that can’t throw strikes. When he blows up and posts a 4 ERA, everyones going to see it as a shock, but with that BB rate (and that ballpark) it really wouldn’t be. The league figured out Daisuke about half way through his first season and he’s been pitching lucky ever since.
I also don’t think Carlos Lee or Lyle Overbay really deserve to make the list. But overall pretty solid.
Dice K is a world class athlete more suited to Japanese baseball, and it’s unique strike zone, soft mound(which allows for those big kick deliveries) and smaller more pliable baseball.
I don’t think he’s lucky as much as he’s very baseball savvy and a survivor. He doesn’t throw strikes since he doesn’t have the stuff he had in Japan, so he nibbles until hitters get frustrated and swing away.
If he can get ahold of some designer steroids in Japan and strengthen his grip on the baseball you’d see a great player.
I agree with you, though, if baseball develops patience with his wild throwing his era will bloat.
Posada’s contract is not bad. Who knew Jorge would get hurt, and in 2007 what else was out there the Yankees can stick behind the plate?
With the Yankees luck, they would have let him go and he’d have not got hurt, and hit .350 for the Mets, Angels, Dodgers or Red Sox in 08.
