Story

A stadium is a stage set as sure as anything on Broadway, and it determines the tone of the dramas within. Citi Field suggests a team that wants to be liked, even to the point of claiming some history that isn’t its own. Yankee Stadium, however, reflects an organization that is in the business of being admired, and is built to serve as a backdrop for the image of the Yankees, at once connected to the city and rising grandly above it.

Worthwhile read, gives you a brief history on the previous incarnations of both the original and renovated Yankee stadium and Shea. Then the piece gives some context of the triumphs and mistakes made of stadiums built last century around the country and moves on to a review of both buildings. Captures some of the details missed elsewhere, like the elevated trains being visible as they were in the original building. Check it out.

Yeah, it is a really good article. Sounds like they think Citifield is nice, but Yankee Stadium is grand. That is how it should be.

  2. StandingO'Neill says:

Something tells me Met fans won’t be too crazy about that article.

    • Moshe Mandel says:

Well, the article makes a valid observation- the Yankees new park drew upon their history for much of their architectural concepts. The Mets have no real history in that regard due to Shea being a dump, so they had to steal history from the Brooklyn Dodgers.
