Brett Gardner just hit his second HR of the spring — this one, off of Aaron Harang to tie the game, 3-3. Gardner is hitting .444 with 2 SB while Melky is hitting .125 (1 single in 8 AB). Joe Girardi is certainly impressed with Gardner and seems to like what he brings to the table.

I know it’s early and I know the Yankees aren’t evaluating players until the end of spring training, however, Melky better start showing the team something if he expects to compete in this CF “battle.”

I think the competition is over. I know it sounds silly, but I think Melky gets traded before the Spring is over, maybe for an improvement at utility infielder.

      It definitely wouldn’t surprise me.

Melky’s “star” has faded considerably. What does he even have to offer other than power upside (that is questionable)? All Gardner has to do is show that he can hit and he’ll get the job.

    • Chip says:

Why would a team trade anything of value for him when they can just wait for him to go on waivers? If there were a trade, I’d go for some high-upside DSL or High-A guys

      • Moshe Mandel says:

I dont think the Yankees would let him go for nothing- if they cant trade him, they will keep him on the 25 man as the pinch runner/ defensive replacement in the corners.

  2. Old Reliable says:

Even if Gardner “fails” as the everyday CF, his defense & base-running would at least equal what Melky provided for the team last year, value wise. No?

  3. leftylarry says:

Gardner plays like a pre-steroid Lenny Dykstra. Melky is a good 4th OF best case.

  4. Chofo says:

Neither will give much value to the team at CF, but Gardner’s speed and defense at least makes him a good bench player
