So long Trip Aces.  You had your chance last year.  The moniker for this year’s starting rotation is “The Five Musketeers” according to the NY Post’s Joel Sherman. Why the Five Musketeers, you ask?  Apparently, a certain comradery has developed between the group, to the point where they typically gather together to watch each other’s bullpen sessions in order to, “learn from each other, pick up or share tips, and offer support.”

This kind of routine is a little unusual, but not unheard of.  Pettitte and Joba raved about how important this type of unity is, with Joba exclaiming that, “to look over and see that they have not left that feeling is indescribable.”  The weirdest thing about this whole Kumbaya routine is that the driving force behind the whole feel-good phenomenon is none other than Mr. Touchy-Feely himself, um, A.J. Burnett!!???

Apparently this whole bullpen thing is Burnett’s idea, and the reportedly prickly, petulant hurler has also “opened up his boat on nearby Lake Tarpon to teammates for fishing jaunts, and is planning to rent a second boat this week for a full-out bass fishing competition for any Yankee who wants to participate.”  Huh.  Color me a tiny bit skeptical, but hey, it can’t hurt, right?  I see tee-shirts!!

Lets be honest- Trip Aces was a great nickname, and the t-shirts were pretty cool. Hmm…t-shirts….

Oh, and about the story, I am of the belief that chemistry does not win games, but in the long grind of a season, it could help keep a team loose and playing up to their abilities. I like this, especially bc we had heard that AJ was a bit aloof.

Yeah, like I said – skeptical, but it’s nice to see, esp w/ Pitchers. We’ve seen in the past how Pettitte picked up better workout routines and whatnot from hanging out w/ Clemens, Cano and Melky doing likewise with A-Rod. Actually, now that we know those two guys are steroid users, maybe it’s best everyone just minds their own business :-)
