I always love the annual prospects lists, and I love me some Fangraphs, so when Fangraphs posts their Yankee Prospects, by Marc Hulet, uhh…..,,,,

Stuff I agree with:

Jeremy Bleich:  “He’ll likely open 2009 in A-ball and could move quickly.”

Stuff I disagree with:

Hulet says that, regarding Jesus Montero, “there are not many people who think he’ll remain a catcher for longer.”  Cashman just recently stated that Montero made great strides behind the pltate, last year, and was not moving anywhere.

Interesting stuff:

Aceves had a 2.40 ERA w/ the Yankees, but a 4.80 FIP – yikes.

Be sure to check it out.

Tom, I’m too lazy to look it up, but what does FIP measure again? Thanks in advance….

    • Moshe Mandel says:

Fielding Independent Pitching. It is basically an adjusted ERA based on events that dont require fielders. (k’s, HR’s, etc)

    • Moshe Mandel says:

Fielding Independent Pitching, a measure of all those things for which a pitcher is specifically responsible. The formula is (HR*13+(BB+HBP-IBB)*3-K*2)/IP, plus a league-specific factor (usually around 3.2) to round out the number to an equivalent ERA number. FIP helps you understand how well a pitcher pitched, regardless of how well his fielders fielded. FIP was invented by Tangotiger.

      From THT.

Was going to post the Fangraphs list last night but ran into computer problems at home.

The author also doesn’t realize Vizcaino pitched in the GCL last year, that Bleich/Brackman both pitched in the Hawaii Winter League and a few other misnomers.

    • Yankee1010 says:

Yep, I didn’t want to seem like a douche and go through his post piece-by-piece, but the extended bit about Vizcaino never pitching in North America, etc., was a little too much for me considering Vizcaino pitched in the GCL.
