Does Brett Tomko make the team?
The battle for the last spot in the bullpen figures to be between Alfredo Aceves, Dan Giese and Brett Tomko. Here’s their numbers so far:
Aceves WL 1-0 ERA 5.40 IP 10.0 H 10 R 6 ER 6
Geise WL 0-1 ERA 5.84 IP 12.1 H 15 R 8 ER 8
Tomko WL 0-1 ERA 1.59 IP 11.1 H 8 R 2 ER 2
So far, its clearly Tomko in a landslide. However, many MLB players are slowly filtering back from the WBC so the final 2 weeks of spring training could be decisive.
Tomko has always been a league average pitcher at best. His stuff is good, he has a fastball and sinker that both run in the low-90′s and an underrated change-up plus a good curve. But his mental toughness has always been questioned, which is especially troubling coming to New York. He tends to be erratic and can lose the strike zone completely at times. I’m also not sure that he’ll fare any better as a reliever, his 07/08 splits show that he tends to get better as the game goes on, though those numbers could be skewed from nights where he simply didn’t have it. But looking at his Inning, Leverage and Role splits I see nothing to lead me to believe he’ll be any more effective as a reliever than he was as a starter. If he does make the team, I suspect his leash will be short, as will his stay here if he doesn’t perform.

Imo no Tomko. I believe Geise with be DFA’d soon to make room for an utility infielder. If the Yankees go with a long man it will be Aceves by default.
They have options on Aceves, and would likely lose Tomko if they don’t put him on the 25 man roster. I suspect they will give Tomko a look in April/May and cut him loose by June if they’re not happy with him, or if someone like Aceves is dominating in Scranton.
Don’t worry, you won’t see much of him. He’ll only pitch in blowouts and if one of the starters gets hurt, they’ll call up Hughes.
They’ll probably give Tomko a look. It can’t hurt.
Do both of you realize the Yankees have a full 40 man roster and Arod can’t go on the 60 day DL? If you want Tomko who do you DFA?
They would DFA Giese. It’s hard to imagine him not clearing waivers, and if somebody claimed him you wouldn’t lose any sleep over it.
If you have to DFA someone to 40-man Tomko, I say go with Aceves or Giese. I don’t see any upside for Tomko.
Stats sometimes lie, if one doesn’t look close enough. I think this is the case with Tomko…he isn’t as good as the numbers show him to be. Conversely, Giese isn’t as bad as his numbers show either.
Giese was good for innings #1 thu 4/5 (except for 2 games), after which the wheels fell off…i think his limit is 3/4 innings.
Giese would never make it through the waver wire. He is good enough for someone to take a long hard look at.
40 man is the problem…again, with whom do you gamble? I don’t like Giese being the odd man out but, so be it.
