According to Dr. Marc Philippon, who performed the surgery on Alex Rodriguez’s hip, the surgery was a success. The good doctor even remarked during a conference call that A-Rod would begin his rehab by riding a stationary bike today:

New York Yankees star Alex Rodriguez will begin his rehabilitation process later on Monday after he successfully underwent arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn labrum and impingement in his hip. Dr. Philippon, a noted hip specialist who performed the surgery, said there were no surprises during the 1 hour, 20 minute procedure.

[T]he three-time most valuable player is expected to check out of the Vail (Colo.) Valley Surgery Center, so he can begin working on range of motion exercises and riding an exercise bike.

Philippon said “there is no doubt in my mind that this was the best option.” He added Rodriguez would not miss any time from next year’s Spring training and claimed today’s surgery would reduce the recovery period necessary for the more invasive procedure that will take place next offseason.

The doc’s confidence is making me feel better about this whole issue.

  2. Chris H. says:

Definitely. I love how they began the operation at 7 a.m., so Alex could get the entire day to rest (they didn’t lose a day) before riding his stationary bike.

I wonder if there are any benefits to doing the surgery at a high altitude? Thats probably just where he chooses to have his practice though.
