As the Yankees continue to contemplate what should be done with A-Rod’s faulty hip, it seems as though the option of corrective surgery is becoming more and more likely.

For instance, Brian Cashman didn’t rule out surgery yesterday evening, despite saying that Alex would rest and rehab the day prior. Also, as Joe Girardi notes, the decision is ultimately A-Rod’s to make and if surgery is a better long-term solution, which appears to be the case, then A-Rod will probably go that route. Essentially, Alex could play through the issue this season, however, the issue could worsen and hinder his level of play in the future — even after surgery — creating an albatross of a contract for the Yankees. Therefore, the team would be best served if A-Rod opted for surgery now rather than later.

It’s obviously a difficult situation, one that would require the Yankees to find a stop-gap at third (e.g. Adrian Beltre, Mark Teahen, Chad Tracy, Brandon Inge, Carlos Guillen, etc.). It’ll be interesting to see how they choose to fill such a tremendous hole if A-Rod does, indeed, go under the knife.

    Chris,

This blog adds absolutely nothing. We all know that A-Rod’s injury “could” require surgery. The fact that Cashman doesn’t rule out surgery does not make surgery “more and more likely”.

Disagree- I have been away from the computer for 24 hours, during which I thought Alex would tough it out. Now it seems that surgery is more likely.

A softening stance towards surgery is definitely a sign that surgery is becoming more and more likely. If Brian Cashman is quoted on Thursday saying that Alex Rodriguez will rest and rehab his hip — then, the next day he’s quoted saying that the surgical route is still an option, that says something.

In that regard, surgery was not likely 2 days ago, now, it seems more likely today.

Let’s talk about what we are seeing from the guys who are playing.

Sorry, but this is just a dumb comment. The best player on the team is not playing at this time — most fans want to know what’s going on with Alex (as well as the other guys). From someone who seems eager to complain about the depth of my blog posts, I must say, you haven’t really offered anything that contributes to the conversation.
