Babe Gardner
Brett Gardner went 3 for 3 with double, a run scored and a steal today in the Yankees 6-5 loss to the U.S. team starring some guy named Jerek Deter or something.
It’s very, very early yet, but Gardner is now 8 for 13 with 3 steals and two ding-dongs in the young pre-season.
BG has traditionally started slow at every new level, only to make necessary adjustments and catch fire later in that stint. This could be the pattern emerging here, as he had a very respectable end-of-season callup and has continued his fine play into the Spring.
Too early, I know, but if BG can hold his own and Jorge can catch, the Bombers could have a formidable offense, indeed. All I know is that if Gardner calls his shot at some point this season, I’m totally going to plotz. I’m not sure what that means or if it’s even spelled correctly, but that’s what I’m going to do.

You used plotz perfectly, and funnily I might add.
Yeeeeeeeaaahhh, Boooyyyy. Some of the words in that language are just marvelously onomatopoeic (spelling?), Moshe. I almost want to convert, just so I can learn them (and use them with frequency).
I know it’s early, but spring training stats don’t really mean much. I think the approach they take on the field has a lot more to do with how they are going to fair in the regular season. They also have a long time to make up for their fast and slow starts.
Although, Gardner certainly does look like he belongs compared to Melky.
It’s true, but his speed has been an eye-opener. That’s something that always extends beyond camp.
He could be our David Eckstein.
Early, schmerly.
Gardner did it the last 40 at bats last season and continues this season.I mentioned the fact that he had better power than advertised and I would not be surprised if he hit a sneaky 10 HR’s next season, while stealing 40-50 bases.Give him the Job and bat him lead off.
Tom, in order to convert you will need a circumcision. Second thoughts?
I think the biggest difference has been his ability to get on top of high fastballs. I don’t know how accurate my perception is, but that’s what I’m seeing.
I got that taken care of as a wee babe, Sam, so I’m practically halfway there!
Oldpep, I’d tend to agree. He definitely looked overmatched in his first stint. He just couldn’t catch up to the fastball.
He was just slapping at it first time up.They worked on using his legs and bingo he can hit.
