Chad Jennings checks in with the list of Yankees that are on WBC provisional rosters, as well as his thoughts on their participation/opting out. The list of players:

Alfredo Aceves
Melky Cabrera
Robinson Cano
Frank Cervelli
Derek Jeter
Kai Liu and Zhenwang Zhang
Damaso Marte
Edwar Ramirez
Alex Rodriguez
Jahdiel Santamaria
Jorge Vazquez
Jose Veras

Veras, Edwar, Melky, and Aceves have already pulled out, all prudent moves considering that they will be fighting for jobs in spring training. The rest of the players are unlikely to alter their standing with the club no matter what they do this spring, and should therefore take the opportunity to represent their country. It seems that every day you hear about another star player opting out, which could diminish what should be an excellent event. Hopefully some of the superstar caliber talents remain involved, and we can see some exciting baseball a month early.

  1. Arod and Jeter will be there, how much more superstar do they need?

  2. Moshe Mandel says:

If the rest of the players are the Santamaria’s of the world, it will get boring pretty quick- a tournament of all-stars is plenty of fun.

  3. steve says:

Marte probably won’t play since he is having trouble with his hammy

  4. StandingO'Neill says:

I said in an earlier post, I hope Cano plays for the Dominicans. He could use a kick in the butt to get going as early as possible. Perhaps the highly competitive nature of the tournament will do him some good.
