Defensive statistics are not something that I relish using, being that they are still very inexact and constantly being altered. That being said, the hardest position to analyze using advanced metrics is catcher, as there are various parts to a catcher’s job defensively. He must catch the ball, call the game, and throw out baserunners. We know that Jorge Posada is decent at throwing out runners and calls a solid game. However, it seems that he is incredibly awful at that third facet of his position, catching the ball. Check out this Fangraphs article, which uses various criteria to analyze catchers and their ability to prevent wild pitches and passed balls. Posada’s name comes up near the bottom no matter the measure that is used. It seems that Derek Jeter has a fellow overrated defender in the infield with him.

I think most of us saw his glove work, we just excepted it because of his offensive out put. Just as Stanly was a better hitter then Joe G. but, Posada was pushing to come up. Joe was a much better catcher and stayed. Posada came up and joe (worked with him) was the everyday catcher. So will it be, as Cervelli, Montero, Romine and Hiashioka get to the bigs…as it always is.

Yeah seems like the Yanks are equipped to deal with his loss, whenever it comes. I just think that his offense is borderline HOF for a catcher, but his defense keeps him out, and that stinks.

    We’ve talked about this previously.
Jorge is a heckuva hitter for a catcher and a solid team player but aside from throwing he’s a poor catcher.
Can’t catch, doesn’t frame well and doesn’t call a particularly good game.

I think he calls a fine game. He’s caught plenty of big winners and big games.

Catch and frame I agree with…
As for calling a good game…hell, one can count on one hand the good catchers around, able to call good games…Pudge wasn’t one of them.
It’s a lost art, most catchers go by the scouting report. News for some of them…pay attention to the hitter or how the pitcher is pitching that day, there are many more things to look for when I watch a catcher at work.
