The New York Daily News is reporting that Brian Bruney has lost yet another 17 pounds, and now measures in at 219 pounds. That’s impressive, considering the size he used to be. More importantly, this is officially our first, “Player X came into camp in better shape than last year” report. Expect 24 more.

  1. Moshe Mandel says:

Isn’t power in the legs important for a power pitcher? If he loses too much weight, he could lose that force, couldn’t he? Losing weight is not always good for an athlete- didn’t A-Rod have some issues with that a few years ago?

  2. EJ Fagan says:

Well, he may not have lost muscle mass. Powerful legs are all about acceleration. If his body mass is less heavy, he can thrust himself forward at a much faster rate, creating more velocity easier.

  3. Casanova Wong says:

I think the weight reduction would help keep him more balanced and improve his controll. Velocity has never been his problem, but the walks are a killer.

  4. Tom Gaffney says:

Actually, A-Rod lost weight in the offseason b/t 06 and 07 and got better. He had his huge MVP season, and attributed some of his improvement to more quickness, less bulk
