Chase Wright, one of the Yankees few left handed pitching prospects and # 26 on EJ’s top 30 prospects list, was designated for assignment to make room for Andy Pettitte on the 40 man roster (Pete Abe). The Yankees likely had to choose between Chase and Dan Giese, and felt that Giese was a better bet to help the team in 2009.

Wright is a better prospect than most Yankees fans would give him credit for, as giving up four consecutive home runs to the hated Red Sox on national television is likely to skew opinions about a pitcher’s abilities. Wright pitched very well at both AA and AAA last season, and should be able to give the Yankees or some other MLB club decent numbers out of the bullpen right now.  Although I hope that he passes through waivers, I find it more likely that some pitching starved NL team will nab him.

You know, I’m a big fan of Wright. I think he’ll get snatched up by someone.

  2. Tom Gaffney says:

It’s odd that the Yanks would give up on a relatively successful lefty. I assume that the organization just doesn’t like his stuff. Maybe he’s not good against lefties? I can’t find his splits anywhere. I wonder who the other names they considered on the 40-man?

  3. Tom Gaffney says:

Giese is def the better bet. He’s put up better numbers at higher levels (though he’s not a lefty).

    • Moshe Mandel says:

Giese is also older, so you might say that Wright just needed some more time, but I agree that in the short term, Giese is a better bet. I really liked what I saw from Dan last season.

  4. EJ Fagan says:

Some team will snatch him up and make him a solid lefty reliever. My bet is San Diego.

This is probably a direct result of the Triple-A rotation being filled.

Also note: This is an endorsement of Phil Coke.

    • Moshe Mandel says:

I think they are pretty high on Coke, enough so that they thought he may be able to start in the majors. I’m not sure about that, but as a reliever his stuff looked fairly strong, and he was very composed on the mound.

    HEH…High on Coke…

  7. Tom Gaffney says:

That last comment made me laugh way more than it should have.

  8. VOIII says:

    sorry…couldn’t resist…
