Well, that was rather embarrassing.

It’s one thing to get shutdown by some of the top young pitchers in the AL East. Brian Matusz and Jake Arrieta have the makings of future rotation studs, and Brett Cecil is already there. But Brad Bergesen? Gimme a break.

The Yankee offense was lifeless for a fourth straight game, not coincidentally this resulted in their season-high fourth straight loss, falling to the Orioles 2-1. Ouch. I can’t even imagine when the last time the Yankees and Orioles played a 2-1 game. Additionally, the loss also marked the first time the Yankees have been swept in 2010 and the Orioles’ first sweep of the Bombers at home in more than 24 years. Double ouch.

The Yankees managed a total of six runs over the three-game set with Baltimore, and touched Baltimore’s vaunted bullpen up for a whopping zero of those runs. I know the Orioles have been playing significantly better under Buck Showalter, but that is borderline unacceptable for the Majors’ leading offense.

If there was a silver lining, it was another effective outing from Ivan Nova, who went a career-high six innings while only giving up two runs, a two-run homer to Matt Wieters. On most days, that’s more than enough for the Yankees to pull out a win. Amazingly, Brian Roberts only had one hit and didn’t score any runs. On the pitching ledger for the O’s, Bergesen somehow tossed 6 1/3 innings of four-hit, one-run ball, and Mark Hendrickson and Jim Johnson combined for 2 2/3 scoreless frames.
